The Cause

The proceeds of the raffle will be managed by the George Weller Memorial Trust and is intended to support young British athletes training and competing in alpine ski events at a national and international level. Since Snowsport GB’s funding crisis last year, GB skiers like Nick Robinson have had to look to fund all their own costs in order to continue to train and compete. Your support is essential if skiers like Nick are to continue in their ambitions to be part of the British Alpine team in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Discover the mountains with us!

30. Juni 2010

Let us tell you all about the treats awaiting guests visiting the beautiful village of Obergurgl and the Hotel Edelweiss & Gurgl**** in the Ötztal Valley!

There are three good reasons why you are sure to find your perfect mountain holiday in Obergurgl…

The village of Obergurgl is blessed with a perfect geographical and climatic location: to the north, visitors entering the valley will find picturesque rock formations, rushing mountain streams and waterfalls, and cows and horses roaming free along the winding hairpin bends; to the south, numerous glaciers, 21 towering 3,000 m peaks and unique natural phenomena such as the blossoming Swiss pine forest provide a breathtaking backdrop.

The area seems to offer an endless range of activities for everyone: families with children, active pensioners, enthusiastic mountaineers and couples looking for a romantic break.

Thank you Martin Jordan!

10. April 2010

So, this is my final blog for 2010. What a great two weeks I have had! The snow conditions have been amazing, skiing in powder the first week, and enjoying sun and spring snow the second week. As usual I have had some great people to ski

with. Most of them Obergurgl ‘old hands’ but also a few ‘newbies’. It was a pleasure to introduce them to the delights that Obergurgl has to offer. I am sure they will be back next year. Why? Well, because of the reliable snow conditions, the wonderful skiing, the lack of lift queues even at busy holiday times, the friendly people, the beautiful scenery, lovely mountain restaurants, and the alpine charm that the Austrians seem to do so well. Now would be a good time to mention the wonderful staff at the Hotel Edelweiss, who have made my stay here so pleasurable. Thank you to Erich and Lukas Scheiber for their hospitality towards the Ski Club of Great Britain. Thank you to Michael for organising  this blog. The people that I met every day, who were so friendly and helpful. Magdalena and her staff at reception, Laura, Maria, Heidi and Marcus behind the bar, Sandor and his staff, particularly Gabor,Monika(hu)  and Ebro. Finally to the cleaner of my room, Renata, always smiling and cheerful.

Hot today – perfect skiing between 2.000 and 3.000m altitude in Obergurgl

8. April 2010

I was hot today! Not just my skiing. It was incredibly warm! At lunchtime today they were sunbathing topless! Alright I’m exaggerating, but if they were bold enough they could have! Top Mountain Star Hochgurgl
I always laugh when people who don’t ski, say ‘ohh I wouldn’t like it, I don’t like the cold’ Today at lunchtime was like being in the Med! Woe betide anyone who forgets their factor 50! I saw someone yesterday who had done just that. Talk about a lobster. Must have been British! The skiing was good today, as long as you knew where to be at the right time. As they say in Comedy timing is everything. That’s where it helps to have a tall, good looking rep who knows the area. Does anyone know one! Martin Jordan – Ski Club Rep

A sunny day again in Obergurgl

7. April 2010
So today, after howling wind yesterday, all was still and sunny.
This was more like the spring conditions I had been expecting. Jackets off having lunch on the terrace, soaking up the sun.The members that skied with me today, really loved it.
It’s amazing how many people keep coming back to Obergurgl, I have never known another resort inspire such loyalty. However today I had two ‘newbies’ and it was a pleasure to introduce them to the joys of this wonderful resort. We skied all over, and of course we has to take in  the top mountain Star resturant, and take the obligitary photos standing next to the ‘tame’ chamoix.
After a ‘full-on’ days sking I deserved some pampering. At about 7.30  I had a jacuzzi in the Edelweiss’s wonderful wellness centre. As I lay there soaking away the tension and relieving the muscles, I watched the sun go down over the mountains. Life is good.
Tonight in the Resturant the food was up to the usual excellent standards. The staff here are all exceptionally friendly, and are a very cosmopoitian bunch. Tonight I had a new waiter and he introduced hinself as Ebro but said I could call him Bro. This tickled me, I am looking forward to going to dinner tomorrow and saying Yo Bro! What’s going down my man?!   Or maybe not……

Sunshine and best snow conditions in Obergurgl

6. April 2010
After yesterday’s snow-storm I awoke today to see sunshine streaming in through the window.
Oh my god, this was going to be a great day! I rushed my breakfast, I could hardly contain my excitment!
I met my members at 9.30 as usual, but not so usually gave them all an easter egg, it was Good Friday! With the eggs I had over, I gave out as prizes, for most improved skier, best faller, most stylish skier, and the winner of the how many linked turns( in powder) can you do competition,- 68!   Your correspondent managed 71…
The sking was out of this world, and this was the second day this week of the fresh snow and sun variety. Because we had a mixed group of abilites, I chose runs where the weaker skiers could go down the piste, while the stronger skiers could ski the powder to the sides of the pistes.
Even though it was Good Friday there were still no lift queues, unbeliveable!.
I knew the restuarants would be busy though, so I booked a table in the morning at my favourite mountain restuarant. It was great to arrive seeing the terrace packed, but our table waiting for us.
After a memorable day skiing the powder, we finished at the Hole Mut Alm restuarant
for a well deserved beer. The views from here are absoutely fabulous to borrow a phrase.
The mountain scenery is truly breath taking. As we drank our beers and reflected on our fabulous day, the group were very sad it was their last this year.
Me? I’ve got another week…..yipee!

Snow today – sunn tomorrow – in Obergurgl!

1. April 2010
Blog from Martin Jordan
What a contrast to the sunny day yesterday! The day started off sunny, but clouded over by 11, then by lunch time the snow arrived and by late afternoon a full scale blizzard was raging. This was a day for a coffee stop and a long lunch. It really felt like the middle of winter!
In the snow storm we headed for the trees, and some of the members tried to hug them.
It was a case of making tight turns, or get punished. I explained to members not to argue with a tree, you will never win.
We dived into a resturant for an afternoon stop, while the gale raged outside. On emerging an hour later, it had got worse, most of the interesting lifts had shut, and so we decided to call it a day. The forecast tommrow is for sun, which should make for an awesome powder day!
