Access to Obergurgl in the Tyrol Alps, Austria
Arrival via Innsbruck (from Eastern Austria or via Munich):
Pass Innsbruck on the A12 autobahn and drive towards Arlberg/Switzerland/Bregenz until you reach the exit “Haiming, Ötztal.” You will reach the Oetz Valley on the B186 highway when you drive towards “Kühtai, Timmelsjoch, Meran, Ötztal Information.” The trip from the autobahn exit to Obergurgl will take an hour at the most.
Arrival via Bregenz (from Switzerland):
When you drive towards Innsbruck/Munich on the A12 autobahn, exit at “Haiming/Ötztal.” Take the B186 highway and drive towards “Kühtai, Timmelsjoch, Meran, Ötztal Information.” The trip from the autobahn exit to Obergurgl will take an hour at the most.
Toll-free arrival (from Germany)
Take the Fernpass Bundesstraße instead of the A12 autobahn or cross the border at Garmisch. Follow the country road system until you reach B186. Drive towards “Kühtai, Timmelsjoch, Meran, Ötztal Information.” Your trip to Obergurgl from the beginning of B186 shouldn’t take much more than one hour.
Arrival from Italy:
You can reach the Oetz Valley from Italy via Merano. In Merano, take the SS44 and drive towards Timmelsjoch/Austria. You will cross the border at the Timmelsjoch Pass. Attention: This border station is closed in heavy snowfalls as well as at night.
The Timmelsjoch High Alpine Scenic Road is only open from early July to about the end of October.
