Golden Autumn Shades in the Pine Forest
The "Obergurgler Zirbenwald" forest, stretching from 1,950 m to 2,100 m above sea level and covering an area of approximately 20 hectares, is home to traditional Swiss pine trees up to 300 years old.

Since Swiss pine trees of such age are extremely rare, this forest has been a protected heritage site since 1963. Back in the 1880s almost the entire tree population was destroyed as a forest fire swept through the region, with only old Swiss pine trees surviving. It is these ancient trees that, together with younger growth, form the two-generation forest of today. Indeed, if you take the time to have a closer look you will discover that the forest is teeming with all sorts of other plants, animals and insects, hidden away in, on or under logs, stones, trees and in sunny clearings.
